VIC:Brownlows for sale in Melbourne

MELBOURNE, Aug 9 AAP - After being purchased by a private bidder three years ago, the
first Australian Rules Brownlow Medal will go up for sale again this month.

The 1924 medal, won by Geelong player Edward `Carji' Greeves, will be auctioned on August 24.

Another Brownlow Medal, won by Richmond's Stan Judkins, will also be auctioned on the
same day in Melbourne.

The Greeves medal was sold by his daughter in 2008, but will go up for sale again this
month, with a pre-sale estimate by auctioneer Leski Auctions of $200,000 to $250,000.

Leski Auctions spokesman Charles Leski said Brownlow Medal sales were extremely rare.

"More Victoria Crosses have been offered for public sale than Brownlows, so to be able
to offer the first Brownlow is incredibly exciting," Mr Leski said in a statement.

"Two on the same day is indescribable."

The Brownlow Medal is awarded annually to the AFL's (formerly the VFL) best and fairest player.

Fed: $50 million Airbus plan for Melbourne Airport

A $50 million runway widening project has begun at Melbourne Airport that will make
it the first city in Australia able to accommodate the new airbus A380 plane.

The A380 Super Jumbo is expected to begin landing and taking off at Melbourne from June 2006.

The airport's 3.7-kilometre north-south runway will be widened by 15 metres to cater

An Open Letter to the Class of 2011:

Sorry to bother you while you're busy texting the person sitting next to you, but -- sigh -- another random old guy wants to tell you a few things.
For starters: Look around.

In a few weeks, your school won't be yours, anymore. Those rooms, walls and desks will all fade into memory. And most of the people sitting around you are going to disappear, too. Although, granted, people are a lot easier to keep track of these days.

Years after my graduation, in the pre-Internet '70s, it was almost impossible to locate, let alone chat with, most of my classmates -- especially since I went to a Catholic school, where every other student was named Ryan or Gallo.

I was reminded of this three weeks ago, when I was first contacted on Facebook, out of the blue, by Don Buckley. Don said he was a former classmate who wanted to reunite the Holy Cross (Flushing) Class of '72 in a private online group.

"Don! Great to hear from you, again!" I typed, while frantically searching for my yearbook. Buckley? Buckley??

Finally, page 20: Oh, of course. Don Buckley.

Hold onto those yearbooks, Class of '11. Thirty-nine years from now, the chances of recognizing any of your old buds from a Facebook photo will be slim to zero.

You may not recognize them in other ways, either. That loser who slept through math may become a wealthy corporate attorney; while the manic over-achiever may find peace living in the woods, somewhere.

And, that poor geek who could never get a date? Well, he'll get married, eventually. And he'll tell you all about his wife and kids, while you're in his office, asking him for a job.

Frankly, I wasn't too optimistic when Don said he wanted to find as many '72-ers as possible, in anticipation of next year's 40th reunion. Who wants to talk about high school?

But, in just two weeks, he tracked down more than 50 of us, including our valedictorian, George Irving, now in Chicago; and our salutatorian John Smith, currently in Berlin.

I admired Don's tenacity, but was far more impressed that he managed to go online and find the right John Smith. "For that," I insisted, "you deserve a Nobel Prize."

As our numbers grew, posts ranged from what-I'm-doing-now stories to hilarious reminiscences -- including the infamous Chop Chop Incident. (One by one, students yelled "Chop," the last yelled "Timber!" and everyone fell to the floor, while the teacher watched, dumbstruck.)

We're all so different now, but not completely. Through the years, many of us have had the same recurring nightmare: We're in the hall, the bell rings, and we can't remember what class we're supposed to be in.

Beware, Class of '11! At 56, I still wake up sweating to that one.

A far more real nightmare: Finding out that at least seven members of our class are gone forever. I still can't believe it.

In my senior year, reunions were the last thing on my mind. And Don did find some classmates who, for various reasons, declined his invitation. But, others, like me, wallowed in the warm nostalgia of it all.

I've since come to understand that the special shared experience of high school is something you don't appreciate until years later; when you realize, perhaps, that things which once seemed so important, weren't so important after all; or that some silly little fact you learned back then -- about life, love or trigonometry -- will stay with you forever.

If certain teachers, coaches or counselors helped or inspired you, thank them before you leave. It will mean a lot to them. And it's the right thing to do.

And, if anyone (teacher or student) made your life miserable ... well, that isn't as easy to deal with. But, before you graduate, try to put it in perspective and get past it. You have your whole life ahead of you. And, trust me, there are many more miserable people out there, waiting for you.

Take lots of photos and hold onto them, along with any other H.S. souvenirs you have. You may not want to look at them anytime soon. But, eventually, you'll wish you had them.

And remember: Even if you haven't been crazy about your school, there's a good chance that, over time, you'll feel a strong sense of loyalty to it. That's because it's been an important part of your life -- just like all those people sitting around you.

If you're anything like me, you'll probably remember most of them forever. You'll remember Buckley. And Alvarez. And ... uh ... Reichenbach?

Wait a second ...

Where's that @#$% yearbook?

NSW:Zoo animals treated to christmas crackers

By Isabel Hayes

SYDNEY, Dec 23 AAP - Like any family in Australia, the kids squealed and pushed each
other in their eagerness to get to their Christmas presents.

But in this household, the parents were too busy ripping open their own gifts to care.

Chimpanzees at Sydney's Taronga Zoo knocked each other off perches and fought for the
presents hand-delivered to them by zookeepers on Thursday.

And while it was no turkey feast, they were more than happy to lay into the crackers
containing popcorn and chunks of watermelon.

Meerkats, tree kangaroos and an elderly bear were also treated to some Christmas cheer,
with the wrapped gifts designed to test their foraging abilities.

Bethyl the 33-year-old Kodiak bear woke up to find a snowman pinata sitting in her
den - and discovered it was filled with honey, peanuts and dried figs.

"Bethyl doesn't see that as a pinata, she sees it as something foreign in her exhibit,
so that will stimulate her to examine it," Taronga Zoo media relations manager Mark Williams
said.

"This is about making sure we have animals behaviourally and genetically fit and healthy."

Every day of the year, a unit dedicated to monitoring the animals' behaviour tests
them with food puzzles designed to increase their foraging skills.

But most of the time, the animals outsmart the keepers.

Bethyl's late brother, Barney, confounded zookeepers a few years ago when he was given
a log stuffed with bugs and worms to puzzle out.

Keepers assumed he would spend some time fishing each bug out of the log.

Instead, Barney simply shoved it underwater and used the water pressure to bust the
log open and enjoyed his feast in one go.

The meerkats didn't show quite as much presence of mind when greeted with their wrapped
gifts of crickets and peanuts on Thursday.

Several of them got their heads stuck inside their presents.

A young and self-sacrificing meerkat, named Zanzibar, ignored the insect delights and
instead kept watch for would-be predators.

The goats across the way didn't look like they really cared.

At times, the zoo does keep predators near their prey to increase the animals' instincts.

The dingoes are often walked around the zoo to attract interest from predators.

"It's about stimulating their mental environment," Mr Williams said.

VIC:Garrett will stay if Labor loses

VIC:Garrett will stay if Labor loses

MELBOURNE, Aug 15 AAP - Federal Environment Protection Minister Peter Garrett says
he will stay on in politics, even if Labor loses the federal election.

Mr Garrett said Saturday's August 21 poll would be "very, very tight", but dismissed
concern that poor-performing state Labor governments were hurting the party's federal
campaign.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard admitted in a television interview on Sunday there was
"disappointment with the performance of state Labor governments" in some parts of the
nation, asking voters to focus on national issues.

Mr Garrett said voters always distinguished between the two at federal elections.

"I think Australians will come to their own views and distinguish between state and
federal policies; they do that at every election," he told reporters in Melbourne.

Mr Garrett, 57, said his electorate of Kingsford Smith in Sydney's south had benefited
greatly from the Labor government in his three years in office, and he was happy to stand
on that record.

"I'm not going to get into any hypotheticals here about what will happen next Saturday,
other than saying if I'm elected by the electors of Kingsford Smith, of course I'll serve
my full term, I wouldn't do anything otherwise," he said.

Mr Garrett said he believed Labor had done enough for Australians to return them to power.

Voters must also decide who would be the best prime minister, he said.

"(Opposition Leader Tony) Abbott's made his name in the boxing ring on ideology. He
hasn't made his name in delivering on policy, and I think Australians will increasingly
focus on that when they get closer and closer to next Saturday," he said.

Mr Garrett made the comments in Melbourne as he unveiled a $10 million election promise
for Australia's arts sector.

The five-year funding pledge would go to the Australia Council to invest in new and
innovative Australian work, including grants of up to $80,000 a year for new artistic
works and up to $60,000 a year for new fellowships.

Vic: Public urged to check $50 notes

MELBOURNE, Dec 10 AAP - Police are warning consumers to check their cash after a string
of fake $50 bills have been found circulating in Melbourne.

About 10 fraudulent notes have been reported to police by traders in the South Melbourne
area since July at the local market, restaurants and grocers.

Police suspect many more may be in circulation.

The notes, which appear authentic, could be difficult to detect as fake, but a crumple
test can check the authenticity of a note, police said.

A genuine one will return to its original state but a fraudulent one will not.

Tearing a real note will be difficult, while a fake will rip easily.

The public is urged to hand over suspect notes to local police with a description of
the person who gave it to them.

Fed: Xenophon slams grocery report

CANBERRA, Aug 6 AAP - Independent senator Nick Xenophon has slammed the consumer watchdog's
report into grocery prices, saying it does nothing to protect families and farmers from
supermarket giants.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), which conducted a six-month
inquiry, found there was "workable competition" in the grocery retail sector.

It also said there was no evidence to support claims by farmers that retail prices
were going up while farm-gates prices declined or stagnated.

"The report does nothing to protect families or farmers from the big supermarket chains,"

Senator Xenophon said in a statement.

"The ACCC is fiddling while families burn cash."

Senator Xenophon rejected the commission's findings about competition among supermarkets.

"Coles and Safeway/Woolworths control nearly 80 per cent of the grocery market.

"There is no other democracy in the world where that would be allowed to happen.

"These chains have way too much power over farmers when they buy from them and way
too much power over families when they sell to them," he said.

The commission needed to explain what "workable competition" is in the market.

"Because it's not working for the farmers and for families."

Vic: Melbourne police start work bans tomorrow

AAP General News (Australia)

Vic: Melbourne police start work bans tomorrow

By Julie Tullberg

MELBOURNE, Aug 25 AAP - Thousands of police will start work bans in Melbourne tomorrow
following a breakdown in negotiations over a five per cent pay rise.

The industrial action comes after the Police Association's push for its members to
get the pay rise they believe is deserved.

But the Victorian government has been firm in negotiations, refusing to budge from
the 3.25 per cent pay increase.

The government has offered police a pay rise in line with its wages policy, and says
anything higher will need to be offset by productivity gains.

The first 11 of 22 work bans will take place tomorrow, from Geelong, south of Melbourne,
stretching across as far east as Pakenham.

Work bans include preventing statistics being sent to government departments, sending
emails and ministerial correspondence.

Police members' pay is at risk of being docked.

Police Association secretary, Senior Sergeant Paul Mullett, said industrial action
was the last resort for ordinary police who simply asked for decent pay and conditions.

"We had hoped this day wouldn't come," Sen-Sgt Mullett said.

"It is disappointing and regrettable that the government's inaction on this issue has
back us into this corner.

"Industrial action is tough and with the added risk of pay being docked, has the possibility
of putting real strain on ordinary working police and their families."

Almost 8,500 of the state's 11,000 officers voted, in a secret ballot required under
federal workplace laws, to impose the work bans from August 21.

Just 109 officers voted against the action, while five votes were informal.

Premier John Brumby has said industrial action is a normal part of enterprise bargaining
and he was not worried by it.

Vic: Firefighters battle to be complicated by severe weather

MELBOURNE, Dec 10 AAP - A total fire ban is in place across Victoria today as firefighters
face severe weather conditions while battling bushfires near many townships.

Crews have spent the night carrying out containment work around some of the worst fire
areas in the state's north-east and Gippsland, ahead of today's forecasted weather of
extreme heat coupled with northerly winds.

However, a cool change is expected later in the day.

"The fire will move very quickly and the intensity of the fire will be very hot,"
said Department of Sustainability and Environment spokesman Stuart Ord.

"There is no doubt the fire will hit settlements ... the question is which ones."

Towns causing the most concern in the state's north-east include Tolmie, the ski resort
of Mt Buller, Merrijig, Kevington, Gaffney's Creek, A1 Mine Settlement and Knockwood.

In the King Valley, Whitfield, Edi, Cheshunt, Cheshunt South, Rose River, Burders Lane
and Paradise Falls are closest to the fire fronts.

And threatened townships in Gippsland include Briagalong, Licola, Valencia, Boisdale,
Bushy Park, Culloden, Newry, Coongulla, Glenmaggie, and Upper Maffra West.

Burning embers, ash, twigs and branches were expected to carry the fire from the highlands
south to the Gippsland plains where drought-affected pasture could easily carry it down
to the coast, Mr Ord said.

Almost 4,000 firefighters from Victoria, NSW, the ACT and New Zealand are battling
blazes statewide, backed by army personnel.

Fires so far have consumed almost 180,000 hectares of bush.

TAS: Heavy flooding in northern Tasmania

TAS: Heavy flooding in northern Tasmania

By Robyn Grace

HOBART, Aug 31 AAP - Emergency crews closed floodgates in a northern Tasmanian river
today in a bid to head off rising flood waters fuelled by torrential rain.

Storms dumped as much as 24cm of rain across the state's north last night, causing
major flooding, road closures, inundating shops and forcing the evacuation of a caravan
park.

Launceston City Council staff closed five floodgates in the North Esk river ahead of
a peak at 10.21am (AEST) today as waters continued to rise in downstream catchments.

Council spokesman Gary Stokes said the gates would remain closed "until we're sure
there won't be a threat".

Mr Stokes said about 100 council staff had worked through the night to minimise damage
from the flood.

Fourteen shops were flooded in the Launceston suburb of Kings Meadow, but emergency
crews were not expecting any damage to residential areas, he said.

About seven people were evacuated from the Apex Caravan Park at Deloraine, east of
Launceston, about 1am (AEST).

Apex volunteers worked through the night to save eight caravans from rising waters
of the Meander River.

A caravan park spokesman said this morning water had reached to the fourth brick of
the amenities block.

"Once it started coming, it really came," he said.

Rain in the area had eased but Mr Stokes said the weather was unpredictable.

"There's sunshine at the moment but there were showers 10 minutes ago," he said.

Tasmania police were forced to close 10 roads overnight as unexpected rain poured into
the Meander River basin, east of Launceston.

No accidents have been reported but police have advised motorists to avoid driving
through floodwaters and to obey all road closure signs, a police spokeswoman said.

The Bureau of Meteorology released floodwatch alerts yesterday afternoon but said the
downpour was unexpectedly heavy.

"The totals just floored us," senior hydrologist Chris MacGeorge said.

Top rainfall overnight was recorded in the Breona area, at the north end of the Great
Lake, which measured 240 millimetres in 24 hours.

Mr MacGeorge said bureau staff were now closely watching river peaks.

River levels in the upper reaches of the Meander River are falling, but major flooding
is expected to continue in the Deloraine area and further downstream.

Climate section meteorologist Ian Barnes-Keoghan said Tasmania's winter weather had
been "terribly varied".

Average temperatures had produced one of the warmest winters ever recorded, but snowfall
on August 11 had also set a new lowest maximum temperature, with Mount Wellington staying
below -5 degrees all day.

Mr Barnes-Keaghan said Tasmania's weather had reflected a warmer weather pattern seen
across Australia, but there were still cold stretches during winter.

"There's very little pattern to it," he said.

NSW: NYE04 Sydney reflects

By Amy Coopes

SYDNEY, Dec 30 AAP - At 9pm (AEDT) tomorrow revellers at one of the world's largest
New Year's parties will be asked, for one minute, to fall silent.

Organisers of Sydney's New Year's Eve celebrations say there's never been a more appropriate
time to come together in acknowledgement of our good fortune.

Sydney City Council has been criticised for going ahead with the NYE bash in the wake
of Sunday's tsunami disaster.

But rather than toning down the celebrations, NYE artistic director Leo Schofield said
he believed Sydneysiders needed to unite in celebration - beginning with a minute's silence
at 9pm.

"There's always the usual calls to cancel the fireworks and divert the money, but that's
simply not possible," he said.

"But I think the right notes will be struck. We are asking people to reflect on the
good fortune we have ... I think that's a particularly appropriate message at this time."

And the council is hoping that coming together, in the spirit of understanding and
generosity, will encourage people to give.

The City of Sydney has launched a New Year's appeal for tsunami relief, pledging $50,000
to Oxfam to kick-start donations.

Mr Schofield said if every person who watched the fireworks on TV gave $1, more than
$5 million could be raised.

Oxfam already has received $1.5 million as a result of the appeal.

"I'd like to see it, in addition to the $35 million already pledged by the Australian
government, top the $45 million donated by the US," he said.

With months of work, and almost $3 million - after corporate sponsorship - invested
in the aptly titled "Reflections" event, the show must go on, Mr Schofield said.

The centrepiece of the night will be Fanfare - a 20 metre model of a disco ball covered
with more than 350 silver pinwheels which will be suspended above the Harbour Bridge for
the midnight show.

Fireworks guru Tino Foti is promising Sydney's fireworks, which are considered the
world's largest New Year display, will be the best yet.

Putting the finishing touches on the fireworks barges in Sydney today, Mr Foti remained
coy about the value of tomorrow night's three tonne, 80,000-effect display.

"Say it's about 20 cents a head, multiply that by all the people who are watching and
you'll start to get an idea," he said.

Mr Foti said he thought people still wanted to see fireworks, despite the tsunami tragedy.

"But I think the minute's silence ... it's the right thing to do."

The city will be treated to an eight-and-a-half minute fireworks display at 9pm, and
15-minute midnight spectacular, culminating on the iconic Harbour Bridge.

There will be 1,500 police on the beat, while the NSW ambulance service has boosted
vehicle numbers at popular vantage points around the city.

St John's Ambulance also will set up a series of First Aid posts in these high volume areas.

Telstra will increase mobile network capacity around the city to cope with the more
than 22 million text messages and 23 million mobile calls it anticipates over the New
Year period.

CityRail and State Transit also will boost services, running 500 trains between 3pm
tomorrow and 3.30am New Year's Day, and 2,519 extra buses from 5pm tomorrow.

Ferries will run at reduced capacity, stopping between 8pm and 12.30am for fireworks.

The RSPCA reminded pet owners to ensure animals - which were often distressed by the
fireworks - were locked up somewhere they felt safe.

* Hosting Service Aligns with Exodus and Bell Canada; Oracle to Begin Hosting Web Sites Through Exodus

NEW YORK, NY -- In a move to create the industry's most comprehensive and reliable hosting service, Oracle Corp. (Nasdaq: ORCL) announced today that Oracle Business OnLine(r), the world's leading e-business Internet application software hosting service, has selected British Telecom (BT), Exodus Communications(tm), Inc. (Nasdaq: EXDS) and Bell Canada as preferred service providers. These strategic relationships will enable Oracle Business OnLine to meet worldwide market demand for its highly scalable, secure, and reliable mission-critical applications hosting service.

Oracle Business OnLine plans to manage its customer relationships and host Oracle and ISV applications from affiliates' data centers. Oracle will procure server hardware from its preferred vendors, including Sun, H-P and Compaq, and application software as required by each Oracle Business OnLine customer. The infrastructure providers will furnish data center infrastructure, network connectivity and bandwidth for Oracle Business OnLine. Such essential infrastructure elements are costly to reproduce, and Oracle Business OnLine intends to partner with global leaders in this space. These relationships form the core of Oracle Business OnLine's virtual data center strategy for achieving scale and global market reach.

"Our customers look to Oracle Business OnLine for our proven strength in installing, running and managing world-class applications through a simple browser and network connection," said Gary Bloom, executive vice president, Oracle Corporation. "As the demand for our service grows, our plan is to uphold the highest possible standards of service reliability, security, and scalability. Our partnerships with best-in-class infrastructure companies is the logical way to do this."

Oracle Business OnLine to Host Web Sites Through Exodus

In addition to hosting and managing its customers' applications through Exodus' Internet data centers, Oracle Business OnLine will extend its offering to include Web hosting services through Exodus, thereby addressing the requirements of Oracle's many "dot com" customers as well as other Oracle customers that have hostable Web sites.

"Our relationship with Oracle signals an important move in the application service provider industry, as it aligns two significant and complementary offerings," said Ellen M. Hancock, president and CEO of Exodus. "Exodus has the largest global network of internet data centers (IDCs) and provides premier professional and managed services to ensure optimal performance for customers' Web sites. Oracle Business OnLine offers the experience in customer service, implementation, and of course, Web-based applications that allow everyone from dot com start-ups to major enterprises to achieve competitive advantage. This win-win combination is expected to increase both Exodus' and Oracle Business OnLine's ability to deliver the industry's most comprehensive solution."

Bell Nexxia Extends International Reach

Through its relationship in Canada with Bell Nexxia, Oracle Business OnLine plans to expand its service to the Canadian market by accessing Bell Nexxia's Web-hosting capability, network infrastructure, and Internet data center. Oracle will provide the server hardware and application software products and expertise in systems management and database administration for hosted applications.

"Our relationship with Oracle in the hosted applications space makes a lot of sense for us because it aligns our leading network services with a world class software company to offer an innovative new service to our customers. We are pleased to be working with Oracle, as leaders for Application Services Provisioning in the Canadian market," says Lisa Donnan, vice-president retail marketing at Bell Nexxia.

Oracle Corporation is the world's leading supplier of software for information management, and the world's second largest software company.
