Vic: Public urged to check $50 notes
MELBOURNE, Dec 10 AAP - Police are warning consumers to check their cash after a string
of fake $50 bills have been found circulating in Melbourne.
About 10 fraudulent notes have been reported to police by traders in the South Melbourne
area since July at the local market, restaurants and grocers.
Police suspect many more may be in circulation.
The notes, which appear authentic, could be difficult to detect as fake, but a crumple
test can check the authenticity of a note, police said.
A genuine one will return to its original state but a fraudulent one will not.
Tearing a real note will be difficult, while a fake will rip easily.
The public is urged to hand over suspect notes to local police with a description of
the person who gave it to them.
