NSW: Minister to consider reports of gang rapes

Police Minister PAUL WHELAN says reports middle-eastern rape gangs are targeting Caucasian
women appear to be accurate and will be investigated.

He told radio 2UE that on preliminary advice given yesterday it appears the story,
which appeared in a Sydney paper on Sunday was accurate.

He says he's asked for a briefing with a senior officer of the police service and with
Commissioner PETER RYAN so he can assess the merits of the story, which don't appear to
be in doubt

He says around a dozen arrests have already been made and people have been charged.

The Sun Herald report says that girls as young as 13 have been brutally attacked in
Sydney's south-west.

It says police examining more than 20 sexual assaults on teenage girls in the last
10 months in the Bankstown area believed they've uncovered a new crime associated with
race.
